TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida States running game is largely defined by Dalvin Cook, but with the emergence of other players the Seminoles are showing they might have one of the deepest ground games in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The 12th-ranked Seminoles are third in the ACC and 22nd in the nation in rushing offense, averaging 244.8 yards per game. They gained 478 yards in last Saturdays win over South Florida, which was just a yard off the school record. The ground game resurgence could bode well for FSU (3-1, 0-1 ACC) on Saturday as it faces a North Carolina defense that is last in the conference in rushing defense.I hope we can keep it going like that, and you can rotate those guys that much, Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher said. That allows us to control the clock, control the ball, move the ball, do the things we need to do.Through the first four games, the Seminoles are running the ball 58.5 percent of the time, which would be a highest percentage in Fishers seven years as coach. From 2010-15, the run percentage was 52.3 percent. Most of the focus remains on Cook, who is coming off a career-best 267 yards against USF.The junior said he laughed when some wondered why he didnt have a 100-yard game the first three weeks. He also added that last weeks game put some questions about any injuries to rest.People get caught up in the stats. Theres nothing wrong with me, he said. I know the runs I make on the practice field. The first three games we were one man or one trip away from a long run. While Cook has emerged as more of a receiving threat out of the backfield, other players have stepped up in the ground game to keep Cooks touches at a manageable level.Jacques Patrick is averaging 6.2 yards per carry and is coming off his second career 100-yard game. The sophomore has emerged as a more physical runner compared to last year and has done a better job of breaking tackles.Patrick also credited Cook for helping him develop into a better player.I feel like I complement him well, Patrick said. He goes out there and gashes the defense. And I gash the defense too, that makes it easier for him. Thats the biggest thing.Freshman Deondre Francois has been used more on read options the past couple of weeks as he matures more as a dual-threat quarterback. His 38-yard run against USF was the longest running touchdown by a Florida State QB in eight years.Fullback Freddie Stevenson has also gotten more into the mix. The senior came into the season with just 12 carries and a touchdown but already has seven carries and three scores in the three games he has played. That has all translated to Cook carrying the ball on just 43.1 percent of the Seminoles run plays. Last year in the 12 games he played, Cooks number was called on 58.6 percent of those plays.Besides the depth in backs, the offensive line has started to gain more consistency in run blocking and resembles the unit they were last year. Center Alec Eberle is hoping the confidence they gained last week can carry over to the rest of the season. Its awesome to know that at any moment we can run the ball or pick it up and pass it, he said. It gives us a good confidence boost and it gives the o-line a confidence boost after all the turmoil and adversity weve been through as an o-line, struggling at first, going out there and putting up 400 yards is pretty big. After facing Georgias Nick Chubb in the opener and Pittsburghs James Conner last week, North Carolina (3-1, 1-0) faces another talented run game on Saturday. The Tar Heels are allowing 240.2 rushing yards per game, which is second-worst among Power Five conference teams.North Carolina coach Larry Fedora said Florida State is the deepest running attack they have faced because of what Francois can do behind center.Defensive coordinator Gene Chizik added Cook is different from the other backs they have faced because of his speed.Hes got really good vision, not that the other two dont, but he makes really good jump cuts and cuts on a dime, Chizik said. Hes powerful when he needs to be powerful. Hes very fast when he gets in the open field and hes got great vision and makes very elusive, quick cuts. HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- Canadian basketball prospect Andrew Wiggins told a small gathering of family and friends at his high school gym Tuesday that he will play at Kansas. Then the Huntington Prep star signed his letter-of-intent and officially became a Jayhawk. No big speech. No bands, live TV coverage or props. Just the way Wiggins wanted it. And just like that, Lawrence, Kan., became more of a focal point for the upcoming college basketball season. "Im looking forward to getting there and just doing my thing," Wiggins said. The six-foot-eight Vaughan, Ont., native chose Kansas over Kentucky, North Carolina and Florida State. Wiggins said there wasnt one particular selling point, taking into account each schools coaching staff, players and program. "I just followed my heart," he said. Hell join one of the top recruiting classes in the country. "I really thought it was one of those long shots, at least when we first got involved," Kansas coach Bill Self said. "The more we hung around, the more we felt he liked us. There was (a) little bit of a connection." Despite the loss of Ben McLemore to the NBA draft, four of Kansas five recruits are considered to be in the top 50 nationally, including guards Conner Frankamp and Wayne Selden, forward Brannen Greene and centre Joel Embiid. Wiggins parents both attended Florida State, and the Seminoles had signed his Huntington Prep teammate and fellow Toronto native, Xavier Rathan-Mayes. Wiggins father is former NBA first-round pick Mitchell Wiggins. His mother, Marita Payne-Wiggins, was a Canadian Olympic sprinter and silver medallist . Older brother Nick plays guard at Wichita State and another brother, Mitchell Jr., plays at NAIA school Southeastern University in Lakeland, Fla. "Florida State was great for mom, it was great for dad," Mitchell Wiggins said. But he recalled telling his son, "its your time. Its not 20-30 years ago. And Florida State (would have been) a great choice." But the father said Kansas will "be a great fit. Hopefully Andrew stays humble, stays hungry. Well see how it plays out." Tuesdays brief ceremony ended the frenzied pursuit of Wiggins, who averaged 23.4 points and 11.2 rebounds per game this season. Rather than turn his announcement into a spectacle, Wiggins wanted a private signing ceremony where he attends classes at St. Josephs Central Catholic High School in Huntington. "I didnt really want to open it up to the public," he said. "I knew it would be jam packed in here. I wanted people who appreciated me and people I appreciate to be here watching me. I wanted a lot of people I kknew.ddddddddddddquot; Initially rated as a 2014 prospect, Wiggins shot to the top of recruiting charts when he decided last October to reclassify into his original high school class of 2013. The four major recruiting services rated Wiggins as the No. 1 overall recruit. Interest grew in recent weeks. As one fan told Wiggins in a Twitter post, "Youre driving 4 schools and 4 fan bases absolutely insane." Wiggins had kept quiet on his intentions. He had yet to even make a verbal commitment and delayed his signing until almost the very end -- Wednesday is the deadline for recruits to sign with NCAA Division I schools. "This is the way I like it to be done -- on my own time," he said. "Ive got a weight lifted off my shoulders. I can relax now." Self said Wiggins "did exactly what we said he was going to do. He told us he was going to take his time. He was going to process everything. So him taking his time wasnt a shock. ... I thought it was a classy, cool way to do it, when kids are seeking more attention these days." Wiggins game did the talking. He has the ability to make shots from all angles and distances, blow past defenders to the basket and reach the rim at eye level. Wiggins was the recipient of this years Gatorade Boys National Basketball Player of the Year and Naismith Foundation national awards. He has been called the best prep prospect since LeBron James. "Im hearing the LeBron comparison and I saw LeBron play some high school, and Im not sure thats a fair comparison to anyone," Self said. "But from a pure athletic ability, he (Wiggins) is one of the most pure athletes the college game has had for a while." Wiggins participated in several post-season all-star games, most recently playing for the World Select Team at the Nike Hoop Summit April 20 in Portland, Ore. Wiggins cited fatigue from the Oregon trip for cancelling scheduled visits from Self, North Carolina coach Roy Williams and Florida States Leonard Hamilton. Wiggins instead talked to them by phone. Kentucky coach John Calipari had visited Wiggins in Huntington on March 28. "When he announced it, it wasnt the one I thought he would pick," said Wiggins high school coach, Rob Fulford, who felt the player would choose Florida State. "But I wasnt surprised. All four have advantages over the others in some way." Wiggins said he planned to relax at home and train with his brothers and some friends during the next few months. Self said hes not sure when Wiggins will arrive in Lawrence because of the possibility of Wiggins involvement in some Canadian national teams over the summer. ' ' '
