CLEVELAND -- The Browns added some beef to their defensive line while they considered cuts to their roster.Cleveland signed defensive lineman Stephen Paea, a 2011 second-round pick released earlier this week by the Washington Redskins. The 6-foot-1, 310-pound Paea gives the Browns some depth and versatility up front. With Desmond Bryant done for the season with a chest injury and Armonty Bryant scheduled to miss four games with a drug suspension, the Browns were in the market for line help. Paea is a solid pickup. Before the Browns announced his signing, Paea posted a picture on Twitter of him signing his new contract with the caption: One mans trash is another mans treasure.Browns coach Hue Jackson said the 28-year-old Paea can line up directly over center or in a four-man front. He can play in a 3-4, and he has played in some 3-4 in Washington, Jackson said on a teleconference Friday. He played in some 4-3 before. He is versatile that way. He can play in any system that we play in.Clevelands defense has struggled during the preseason and Jackson made it clear hes willing to experiment and try different formations. Nothing is set in stone. We will do whatever we think it takes to win football games, he said. The most important thing now is about game planning to give our players the best chance to have success in games and have opportunities to win games. To make room for Paea, the team waived running back Rajion Neal, who suffered a quadriceps injury in Thursdays 21-7 loss to Chicago. The Browns finished the exhibition season 0-4, only the third time in franchise history the team has gone winless in the preseason. Jackson knows theres work to be done before the Sept. 11 season opener at Philadelphia, and the coaching staff and front office members met Friday to discuss roster moves. The NFL requires teams be down to 53 players by Saturday, and one of the most interesting decisions could be with cornerback Justin Gilbert. A first-round draft pick in 2014, Gilbert has been a major disappointment with Cleveland. The former Oklahoma State standout has made just three starts in two seasons and shown little to justify his selection with the No. 8 overall pick -- by the Browns previous regime.Gilbert is currently in concussion protocol after sustaining a head injury last week in Tampa. But Jackson said the 24-year-olds roster spot is not a given.Justin did some things better (this summer), Jackson said. Everything has an opportunity to be evaluated, everything that every player has done. Our goal and our job is to make sure that we keep the best players here. Do I think he has improved? Yeah. Are we going to sit down and evaluate and talk through every opportunity that a young man has had and we can see where they fit for our football team? We are going to do that, also.---Online: AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP-NFLDeMar DeRozan Jersey . MINNEAPOLIS -- Yan Gomes found it difficult on Sunday to celebrate the Cleveland Indians win with his right arm in a sling.Josh Tomlin pitched 7 2/3 strong innings, Mike Napoli hit one of three Cleveland homers and the Indians beat the Minnesota Twins 6-1.Gomes snapped an 0-for-27 hitless skid in the third inning with a double that went off the foot of Minnesota starter Kyle Gibson and trickled into the outfield through a hole at shortstop. Two innings later, he was carted off the field with a right shoulder injury.Running out a grounder, Gomes stepped awkwardly on first base as he tried to avoid the swipe tag of first baseman Kennys Vargas, who was pulled off the bag on the throw from third baseman Eduardo Nunez. Gomes landed on his shoulder as he tumbled to the ground. As far as I know its kind of like a shoulder separation, he said. Im going to Cleveland to be checked out and well know more later.Manager Terry Francona said Gomes, who has started 63 games behind the plate, will end up on the disabled list with a corresponding roster move forthcoming, most likely a recall of Roberto Perez, who left Triple-A Columbus game Sunday.Things like this happen, Francona said. Hopefully, youre prepared so it doesnt get in the way of what youre trying to do.Chris Gimenez had two RBI off the bench as the division-leading Indians won for just the third time in eight games.Gimenez replaced Gomes and hit a two-run single in the sixth for a 4-0 lead. Its extremely unfortunately for the team, for him number one, but my heart goes out to the guy, Gimenez said. He literally cannot get a break.Tomlin (10-2), who gave up eight runs -- including a season-high five earned -- in 4 2/3 innings against Detroit in his previous outing July 6, looked more like the pitcher that had six straight quality starts before that outing. He allowed six hits and struck out four against the Twins.Minnesota had two runners on in the first, but just three over the next four innings as Tomlin breezed through the Minnesota lineup. He retired 11 straight before Max Kepler hoomered in the sixth.ddddddddddddI think mainly the offense put up enough runs and just let me go out there and settle in a little bit, he said. We were able to execute pitches when we needed to.Gibson (2-6) allowed a season-high 10 hits and four earned runs in six innings. He struck out four.We were going to see how aggressive they were going to be, Gibson said. They really showed more patience today than we probably expected.Napoli homered into the second deck in left field for a 1-0 lead in the second. It was his 20th of the season -- and second in three games -- to tie Carlos Santana for the team lead.Three straight two-out singles by Cleveland in the fifth inning increased the lead to 2-0 when Francisco Lindors RBI single scored Santana.Tyler Naquin homered in the eighth and Jason Kipnis in the ninth.TRAINERS ROOMIndians: RHP Tommy Hunter was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a non-displaced fracture in his lower back. Cleveland recalled RHP Cody Anderson from Triple-A Columbus to replace him. Francona said Hunter was carrying his child during the All-Star break and tripped on a stair, injuring his back protecting the child. Hunter still felt pain while throwing Saturday and an MRI found the fracture.Twins: General manager Terry Ryan said 3B Trevor Plouffe, on the disabled list since July 2 with a fractured left rib, is making progress, but theres still some things when hes sleeping and moving.UP NEXTIndians: Corey Kluber (9-8, 3.61), who earned the win at the All-Star Game with a scoreless inning, takes to the mound Monday in Kansas City against the Royals Edinson Volquez (8-8, 4.85). Since June 5, Kluber is 5-2 with a 2.79 ERA, allowing more than two earned runs just twice.Twins: Coming off consecutive quality starts, Ricky Nolasco (4-7, 5.22) is scheduled to be on the mound as the Twins open a three-game series Monday in Detroit. Matt Boyd (0-2, 5.77) is scheduled to start for the Tigers. ' ' '
