CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Oregon State was feeling pretty good after Darrel Garretsons 16-yard touchdown run in overtime. It ended OSUs 12-game Pac-12 losing streak and including several rushing marks that landed into Oregon States record book. But second-year coach Gary Andersen wanted the Beavers (2-3, 1-1) to keep Saturday nights 47-44 win over California in perspective. Its a win in the Pac-12, obviously, Anderson said. It hasnt happened in a long time. So it should give them an understanding of what it takes to win a game in the Pac-12.I dont know if its a program-defining moment. I wouldnt necessarily say that. I expect those to be down the road.Garretsons game-winner was practically a walk to the end zone during the final 10 yards, but the outset of the play was hair-raising. Garretson bobbled the center snap, but quickly recovered, cut to his right and sprinted to the end zone to put away California (3-3, 1-2).Thank God I had that left glove on. These guys are giving me (a hard time) about it because its a linemans glove, but it is what it is, and it stuck, so were good, Garretson said.It was fitting that Oregon State won the game on a running play, because the Beavers ran over California most of the night.Ryan Nall ran for 221 yards and three touchdowns but left the game early in the fourth quarter with a leg injury. Garretson rushed for 105 yards and two touchdowns and completed 13 of 24 passes for 85 yards.Oregon State ran for 474 yards, a school record against a Pac-12 opponent. The Beavers had a season-high 559 yards, though it almost wasnt enough, as they blew a 17-point, fourth-quarter lead.Davis Webb threw for 113 yards, well under his season average of 428.6 passing yards, for California (3-3, 1-2). Khalfani Muhammad ran for 165 yards and a touchdown while Tre Watson had 134 yards and two touchdowns. But the poor run defense and lack of offense for much of the game -- 180 yards through three quarters -- left Cal coach Sonny Dykes perplexed. Our guys fought hard in the second half, but it was too little, too late, Dykes said. I told them guys, I didnt think we deserved to win. We sleepwalked through the first half, for sure.Nall ripped off runs of 80 and 62 yards during the third quarter as Oregon State increased its lead to 34-17. Artavis Pierce scored on a 2-yard run that made it 41-24 with 10:35 left when it began to unravel.California trimmed the deficit to 41-38 with 2:41 left and Matt Andersons 29-yard field goal with five seconds remaining sent the game into overtime.OSUs defense forced a three-and-out by California in overtime, and Anderson kicked a 39-yard field goal to set the stage for Garretsons game-winner.The defense studded up and made them kick a field goal. We made the play we needed to make to win the game, Andersen said.THE TAKEAWAYCALIFORNIA: The Bears lost their seventh consecutive road game, and it wont look pretty on video next week. The Pac-12s worst rushing defense continued to struggle, giving up an average run of 10.1 yards to Oregon State.OREGON STATE: The Beavers rank No. 100 or lower in rushing, passing and total offense nationally, but didnt look the part in the first half when they scored on their first three drives. Led by the bruising runs of Nall, Oregon State also scored on its first four drives of the second half.NALL APPEARS OKNall said he reinjured his foot early in the fourth quarter, an injury hes been dealing with this season. Andersen said he expects Nall, whose 221 yards was a career high and 10th best in Oregon State history, will be ready to play next Saturday against Utah. When Nall left in the game with 11 minutes remaining, he was within 18 yards of the Reser Stadium record of 239 rushing yards, set by Steven Jackson.UP NEXTCALIFORNIA: The Bears get a bye next week as they prep for a Friday, Oct. 21 home game against Oregon, a wounded opponent on a four-game losing streak.OREGON STATE: The Beavers remain in Corvallis and cap a two-game home stand against Utah next Saturday. There was no way I wasnt going to score that for them.Fitzgeralds bruising 4-yard touchdown run was one of the many highlights for Mississippi States running game, which finished with a season-high 365 yards. Fitzgerald ran for 182 yards and two touchdowns while Aeris Williams ran for a career-high 140 yards and a touchdown. It was a stunning win for Mississippi State (4-5, 2/3 Southeastern Conference), which was coming off an uninspiring 56-41 win over lower-level Samford. The Bulldogs had lost their previous three games against FBS competition. It was an equally stunning loss for Texas A&M. The Aggies were ranked No. 4 in the first College Football Playoff rankings released on Tuesday, but will now almost certainly tumble out of contention. We got whipped, Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin said. We couldnt stop the run and we couldnt run it. They dictated play today. The Bulldogs biggest drive was a grinding 14-play, 73-yard push in the fourth quarter that ended with Fitzgeralds aforementioned 4-yard touchdown for a 35-21 lead. Mississippi State ran 10 straight running plays at one point in the drive. The offensive line played fantastic today, Fitzgerald said. I couldnt have asked for anything more from them. Trevor Knight was knocked out of the game in the second quarter with an apparent right shoulder injury and didnt return.Knight wasnt very effective when he was playing, completing just 5 of 14 passes for 43 yards. He also ran for 54 yards and a touchdown.Mississippi State took a 28-7 lead late in the second quarter after Fitzgeralds 7-yard touchdown pass to Fred Ross, but Texas A&M responded with Christian Kirks 93-yard punt return for a touchdown to pull within 28-14 by halftime.Knights backup, Jake Hubenak, threw a 54-yard touchdown pass to Kirk early in the fourth quarter to pull Texas A&M within 28-21. Hubenak added a 4-yard touchdown pass to Josh Reynolds with 1:33 left, but the Aggies couldnt get enough momentum to overtake Mississippi State.Hubenak completed 11 of 17 passes for 222 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in the games final seconds. He really gave us a chance at the end of the game to tie it, Sumlin said. He was a bright spot today, and weve got confidence in Jake going forward.POLL IMPLICATIONSTexas A&M will likely be punished in all three major polls following a loss to one of the SECs worst teams so far this season.THE TAKEAWAYTexas A&M: The Aggies didnt perform well under pressure after being the surprise No. 4 team in the first CFP rankings .Mississippi State: The Bulldogs earn a rejuvenating win against the Aggies after a rough October that included losses to BYU, Auburn and Kentucky.UP NEXTTexas A&M: The Aggies return home and will host Mississippi.Mississippi State: The Bulldogs travel to face Alabama on Saturday.-----More AP college football at www.collegefootball.ap.org and https://twitter.com/AP-Top25 .
