BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Just two days after losing star center Jack Eichel to a long-term injury, the Buffalo Sabres suffered another big loss Thursday night, when first-line winger Evander Kane crashed into the end boards.The play happened with 11.3 seconds to go in the second period of Buffalos season opener versus the Montreal Canadiens. Kane became tangled with Montreal defenseman Alexei Emelin but appeared to simply lose an edge on his skates as he flew violently into the boards.He rolled around in clear agony on the ice. Kane needed help to get to the dressing room.He did not return for the third period and was taken to the hospital for further evaluation and precautionary measures, the Sabres said.As for Eichel, Sabres general manager Tim Murray told reporters that the center could be out for as long as six to eight weeks, although the team has not put a firm timeline on a return.I guess some guys have come back after four or so, but we cant count on that and we cant sit here and wait for four weeks to come and think its all going to get better. We have to prepare, Murray said. SUNRISE, Fla. -- The Florida Panthers are off to a good start on improving their play in overtime.Vincent Trocheck scored two goals, including the game-winner in overtime, to lift the Panthers to a 4-3 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Thursday night.The Panthers only won one of seven overtime games last season, but have beaten the Devils in the extra period twice this season.It was a great win for us tonight. I didnt think we played a great game, but we found a way, Panthers coach Gerard Gallant said.Trocheck poked in a rebound past Cory Schneider after his initial shot was blocked with 43.4 seconds left in overtime.There were three of us on the rush so they gave me the lane and I took the shot, Trocheck said. Schneider is a good goalie and made the first save, and then the puck came back to me and I put in the rebound.Denis Malgin and Aaron Ekblad also scored for the Panthers and James Reimer made 33 saves.
