The drive from Provo, Utah, the home of BYU, to Morgantown, West Virginia, where the West Virginia Mountaineers are from, covers about 1,929 miles. That is far. In fact, it is farther than the distance between any two teams currently playing in the same Power Five conference by almost 400 miles. In the Pac-12, Washington (Seattle) to Arizona (Tucson, Arizona) is 1,537 miles, if youre scoring at home. But yet, maybe as soon as next season, the Cougars and Mountaineers could be Big 12 ... rivals? The Cougars (1-2), who have already played three Pac-12 teams this season, take a swing at the Big 12 on Saturday when they face West Virginia (2-0) -- though they wont be making the Provo-to-Morgantown trip. The game will be played at FedEx Field, home of the Washington Redskins, in Landover, Maryland. It is kind of a neutral site. Proximity favors a heavy Mountaineer presence, but BYU has a national following with its affiliation to the Church of Jesus of Latter-day Saints and fans that are willing to travel great distances to see their team. BYU officials are estimating about 10,000 BYU fans will be in attendance. That is among the many reasons BYU was one of 11 schools to have a face-to-face interview with Big 12 officials a few weeks back as the conference ponders expansion. The Big 12 has made no commitment to expand. Maybe it will. Maybe it wont. Who really knows?I think we need to expand, said West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen, who, along with the other coaches, doesnt get a vote. The thing about the BYU-West Virginia thing, it only would be a once-every-four-year game, I would anticipate. Ive voiced my opinion. All those are in the hands of the commissioner and then the athletic directors and presidents. Theyll get this thing figured out, Im quite certain.West Virginia is already on an island of sorts as a Big 12 member. Iowa State in Ames is closest to Morgantown at 860 miles and Lubbock, Texas, home of Texas Tech, is the farthest at 1,273 miles. Whats another 700 miles?BYU, which competes as an independent in football and has most of its other sports in the West Coast Conference, wants to be in a Power Five conference and makes a good case it could compete in one immediately. The Cougars opened the season with a victory against Arizona and then lost back-to-back games to Utah and UCLA by a combined four points. The Cougars are 3-2 in their last five against Big 12 opponents and have 21 victories against Power Five schools since 2003, second only to Navys 22 among non-Power Five schools.Just as Houstons game against Oklahoma during the opening week of the season was not an audition, this is not a tryout for BYU.Still, cant hurt to make a good showing.Things to know about the first meeting between BYU and West Virginia.TY-ED UP: Already there is some concern among BYU fans about first-year offensive coordinator Ty Detmer, the beloved former BYU player and Heisman Trophy winner. Detmer had never been a college coach before he was hired by new Cougars coach Kalani Sitake, a former teammate of Detmers. The Cougars offense ranks 113th in the nation in yards per play at 4.66.We have to find our identity in every phase and have something to hang your hat on, said Sitake, also a former BYU player. We dont have that offensively right now. When we need to get a play, you usually go to your go-to play and were still trying to find that. Its way too late going into Game 4 so we need to establish that soon. The Cougars will stick with quarterback Taysom Hill , who beat out Tanner Mangum for the job heading into the season.FAST AND FURIOUS: West Virginia has no such identity issues. The Mountaineers are typical Big 12, up tempo and spread. They are ranked 20th in the country in yards per play at 6.82 yards per play.Senior Skyler Howard has benefited so far from a group of receivers that is holding onto the ball better than last season.BYU ROOTS: Holgorsen is part of the Hal Mumme/Mike Leach coaching tree that uses a version of the Air Raid offense, which has some roots that go back to BYUs prolific passing attacks under former coach LaVell Edwards.A lot of the principles in the passing game were things that all those great quarterbacks were doing back there for BYU, Holgorsen said. And we took them and stole them and maintained them to this day.Stitched 76ers Jerseys . -- Quarterback Will Finch threw for 252 yards and three touchdowns, and Yannick Harou rushed in two scores as the No. 76ers Jerseys 2020 . LOUIS -- Mike Smith is used to facing plenty of shots, so this was nothing new. https://www.cheap76ers.com/ . Pence singled in the winning run with no outs in the ninth inning to give the Giants a 7-6 victory over the San Diego Padres on Sunday. Philadelphia 76ers Shirts . Malkin got tangled up with Detroits Luke Glendening early in the third period and his left skate took the brunt of collision with the boards behind Pittsburghs net. Philadelphia 76ers Pro Shop . Uniteds eighth defeat of a wretched campaign means Liverpool, which currently occupies the fourth and final Champions League place, could go nine points clear of its fierce rival by beating West Bromwich Albion on Sunday. Charlie Adam scored both of Stokes goals at Britannia Stadium either side of Robin van Persies equalizer, with a miserable day for seventh-place United capped by first-half injuries to centre halves Jonny Evans and Phil Jones that forced them off.NEW YORK -- As unusual as the New York Mets rotation appears to be this week, manager Terry Collins did not devise it by throwing a bunch of names into a hat. But perhaps Miami Marlins manager Don Mattingly will do that with his lineup as he tries to generate some offense for his sputtering club.A pair of National League wild card contenders will meet Monday night, when the Mets host the Miami Marlins in the opener of a pivotal four-game series at Citi Field. The Marlins (67-63) and Mets (66-64) are chasing the St. Louis Cardinals, who currently occupy the second wild card spot. The Cardinals (68-61) lead the Pittsburgh Pirates (67-61) by a half-game, with the Marlins (1 1/2 games back) and the Mets (2 1/2 games back) running third and fourth. Both the Mets and Marlins missed opportunities to gain on the Cardinals on Sunday, when New York lost to the Philadelphia Phillies 5-1 while Miami fell 3-1 to the San Diego Padres. The Marlins scored just one run in losing the final two games of a three-game series to the Padres. Miami scored only 19 runs in the last eight games, a span in which it has scored more than three runs once.Following Sundays loss, Mattingly, tongue presumably planted firmly in cheek, said he might follow in the footsteps of his former manager, the late Billy Martin, and get creative in hopes of snapping the Marlins out of their slump. We could throw (names) in a hat and spin it around and hope magic pops out, Mattingly said.Collins is hoping for some magic as well with a piecemeal starting rotation. With usually sturdy right-hander Jacob deGrom beinng skipped due to his recent struggles -- he has allowed 13 runs over 9 2/3 innings in his last two starts -- the Mets will promote right-hander Rafael Montero from Double-A Binghamton for Mondays opener against Marlins ace right-hander Jose Fernandez.ddddddddddddMontero, who has made nine big league starts but has not started for the Mets since April 28, 2015, is expected to be followed in the rotation Tuesday by rookie right-hander Seth Lugo, who will be making his third big league start. The Mets losing pitcher Sunday was rookie right-hander Robert Gsellman, who made his first career start.I always look at it as a learning process, and if these guys are going to pitch at the major league level, theres no better learning area than to pitch in a pennant race and learn how to deal with the pressures and the stress of what youve got to do to go out and do your job, Collins said. The strength of the Mets was supposed to be their quartet of young fireballers -- right-handers deGrom, Noah Syndergaard and Matt Harvey and left-hander Steven Matz -- but Harvey is out for the season after undergoing surgery to correct thoracic outlet syndrome and Matz is on the disabled list with a sore left shoulder, though he is expected to return and start Thursdays series finale.Yeah, this is the first time Ive had three rookies -- basically, three rookies -- in a row pitching, said Collins, who has managed 1,818 major league games. But its what weve got. ' ' '
