BATON ROUGE, La. -- LSU interim coach Ed Orgeron chuckled when asked what he told the Tigers at halftime of what was then a 10-all stalemate with heavy underdog Southern Mississippi. The implication was that it was not entirely fit for public consumption. And Orgeron could laugh about it because the Tigers dominance from that point forward left the coach with the impression that hed been well understood.Derrius Guice broke loose for touchdowns of 61 and 20 yards early in the third quarter, and LSU added a couple more long scoring plays while scoring 35 unanswered second-half points in a 45-10 victory on Saturday night.I think our guys woke up a little bit at halftime and just decided to play hard, Orgeron said. I just challenged them.LSU had two, long one-play touchdown drives -- an 80 yard catch-and-run by D.J. Chark and a 63-yard reception by Malachi Dupre on Danny Etlings long heave.LSU safety Jamal Adams helped the Tigers pull away when he forced Golden Eagles running back George Paynes fumble and then recovered it at the USM 26-yard line, setting up Guices second score. We were a little frustrated at halftime, Adams said. Just as a leader I wanted to rally the guys back. ... We wanted to come out and give them no more points. In the span of the third quarter, LSU (4-2) built a 28-point lead. The third quarter was just a bad quarter, Southern Miss coach Jay Hopson said. It was bang, bang, bang and it went from a ball game either way to being down 21 points in what seemed like 3 minutes. All five of the Tigers second-half TDs came from beyond 20 yards, with three going for more than 60.Heres the deal. We want to take shots. We want to be explosive, Orgeron said, stressing that he wants opposing defenses to pay for selling out to stop the Tigers deep and powerful running game. That was, I think, one of the most (significant) improvements in the game.Etling finished with his best numbers since taking over as starter in the third game of the season, completing 11 of 18 passes for 276 yards and three TDs.Dupre added another touchdown on a 23-yard reception in the fourth quarter. Chark also scored a 19-yard rushing touchdown on an end-around in the first half.Ito Smith scored the lone TD for Southern Miss (4-3) on a 1-yard run that gave the Golden Eagles their only lead at 7-0. Golden Eagles QB Nick Mullens completed 25 of 36 passes for 161 yards.FORMIDABLE FILL-INGuice finished with 162 yards on 16 carries in his third start this season in place of Leonard Fournette, who is recovering from a left ankle injury and has not played since LSUs loss at Auburn on Sept. 24.The 5-foot-11, 212-pound Guice has rushed for 155 yards or more in each of his starts.Guice gave LSU the lead for good when he bolted through a gaping hole blown open by guard Maea Teuhema, center Andy Dodd and tackle K.J. on the left side of LSUs offensive line and galloped into the clear for a career-long scoring run .The linemen did a great job of setting it up for me and the rest is history, because Im not going to get caught from behind, Guice said. While Guices first touchdown demonstrated his break-away speed, his second showcased his elusiveness as he darted forward and then cut suddenly outside to elude would-be tacklers.Orgeron said he is optimistic Fournette will play next weekend.MISLEADING STATSSouthern Miss dominated time of possession, 37:59 to 22:01 and ran 73 total plays to LSUs 42. LSUs big plays rendered those statistical advantages insignificant.DISCIPLINELSU cornerback Kevin Toliver was benched the first half for breaking an unspecified team rule, Orgeron said, adding that several other starters snaps were limited early on because we just had some other guys that didnt practice the way they should. Youve got to practice hard to play.POLL IMPLICATIONSLSU, a leading vote-getter among unranked teams in the AP Top 25 Poll this past week, could be ranked again after two straight resounding victories since Orgeron took over in late September.TAKEAWAYSSouthern Mississippi: The Golden Eagles have play makers and the ability to compete in spurts with Power-5 conference teams, but need help for a beleaguered defense that has now allowed 100 points in its last two games.LSU: The Tigers have the elite talent to turn it on suddenly and crush an underdog from a mid-major conference -- and might be trending in the right direction to make a run in the Southeastern Conference.UP NEXTSouthern Mississippi: The Golden Eagles are off next week before hosting Marshall on Oct. 29.LSU: The Tigers host No. 12 Mississippi this coming Saturday night in a pivotal mid-season clash in the SEC West race. Matt Kemp hit a two-run homer. Little-used Daniel Castro had a career-best three RBI.On the mound, Mike Foltynewicz (9-5) pitched two-hit ball over five innings in his final start of the season -- and his first since leaving a Sept. 12 game against Miami after being hit in the left calf with a liner. When the atmosphere is like this, its definitely contagious, Castro, who was hitting .189 and had just four RBI for the season, said through a translator. The team feels good. You feel good. The Braves won for the ninth time in their last 10 games, building some momentum for their move to SunTrust Park next season. Since an 18-46 start, when they had the look of one of the worst teams in baseball history, theyve gone 47-46 under interim manager Brian Snitker. It was another high-energy, get-after-it game, Snitker said. I hope we keep adding to that. The Phillies are heading in the opposite direction. They lost for the fifth time in six games, prompting Ryan Howard and A.J. Ellis to call a team meeting that forced manager Pete Mackanin to huddle with the media in a tunnel outside the clubhouse. Its nice to see, Mackanin said. It means somebody cares.Adam Morgan (2-11) lasted five innings, giving up 10 hits and nine runs, the most hes allowed in a dismal season. Its all about pitching, Mackanin said. Pitching keeps you in games.Atlanta jumped ahead in the second when Dansby Swanson hit a run-scoring triple and Castro followed with a single. The Braves added three more runs in the third, with Swanson and Castro each contributing RBI hits, and really poured it on with a four-run fourth. Morgans throwing error allowed one run to score, another came home on a wild pitch, and Kemp finished it off with his 34th homer into the seats in left-center.Castro added another run-scoring single in the seventh, equaling his career high with three hits.Freemaan extended the longest streak in the big leagues this season with a single in the sixth off Phil Klein.dddddddddddd Freeman had been tied with Bostons Jackie Bradley, who put together a 29-game run in April and May.Freeman had already extended his on-base streak to 46 consecutive games when hit by a pitch in the third, equaling the longest this season in the big leagues. Washingtons Jayson Werth reached base in 46 straight games before his streak was halted Aug. 18.You just take it for granted with this guy, Snitker said of Freeman. Hes a machine.MEMORABLE HITAtlanta rookie Rio Ruiz, who spent most of the season in the minors, tripled in the eighth for his first big league hit.Its great to get it out of the way, Ruiz said. Its even better to get the win.THE REAL DEALFormer heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield took part in the countdown to the final game at Turner Field, pulling down a banner in left field to reveal 4 -- the number of games remaining at the ballpark and the season.Holyfield lives in the Atlanta area and was among those who carried the torch during the opening ceremony for the 1996 Summer Olympics. Turner Field was initially built as the 85,000-seat main stadium for the games, and then converted to baseball before the `97 season.TRAINERS ROOMPhillies LF Roman Quinn didnt play after leaving Tuesdays game with a strained left oblique. Its not known if hell get back on the field this season.Hes more scared than anything that its going to recur or that hes going to make it worse, Mackanin said. Theres no sense in him getting hurt with four or five games left in the season.UP NEXTPhillies: RHP Jeremy Hellickson (12-10, 3.78 ERA) goes against the Braves for the fourth time in his career.
