PITTSBURGH -- All Jimmy Paredes was thinking about was catching the ball. Same with Jake Elmore. Not that concentration helped. Russell Martins bases-loaded fly ball popped out Paredes glove when he ran into the second baseman with two outs in the ninth inning, and the second missed catch of the night by a Houston right fielder helped the Pittsburgh Pirates rally past the Astros 5-4 Friday. "Im anticipating the ball being hit to me, just like I do on every pitch," Paredes said. "All Im thinking about is catching the ball for the third out. Thats all I wanted to do. I was watching the ball and then I hit into him. Sometimes things like that happen in this game, and its frustrating to lose like this." Houston manager Bo Porter said Paredes, who was charged with an error, should have peeled off and let Elmore make the play. Paredes collided with second baseman Jose Altuve on Monday night while chasing a pop fly at Detroit. "Its not a lack of communication, because theres only one person that should be communicating," Porter said. "The infielder is not saying anything. If he gets underneath the ball, the outfielder is running in and hes looking at the infielder. And if the infielder is waving his hands and under the ball, you let him take the ball." That wasnt Houstons only fielding foible. Down 4-1, Pittsburgh started its comeback in the sixth when Chris Carter, usually a designated hitter, dropped Andrew McCutchens fly ball to right for a three-base error and Garrett Jones followed with a double. Pedro Alvarez hit a two-run homer in the eighth, a 462-foot drive that cleared the right-field stands and went into the Allegheny River on one hop. Starling Marte singled off Edgar Gonzalez (0-1) leading off the ninth, and Travis Snider hit into a forceout, with the Astros failing to turn a double play with a late relay throw to first by Elmore. McCutchens single put runners at the corners, and Gonzalez fielded Brandon Inges comebacker and dropped it for an error as he turned to throw to second, missing his chance to start an inning-ending double play. Neil Walker took a called third strike with a full count, and Martin lifted a full-count pitch to short right-centre field, where Elmore settled under the ball and Paredes slammed into him as the ball hit his glove and fell to the field. "In that situation, the crowd is so loud that you cant hear anybody calling for the ball," Elmore said. "We had already let one ball drop, and I didnt want to a second one to fall, too. I was waving my arms, hoping Jimmy would see me, but he had his eye on the ball the whole time." Justin Wilson (4-0) pitched a scoreless ninth as the Pirates (25-17) won for the seventh time in eight games to move a season-high eight games over .500. "This games crazy sometimes," Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle said. "The crowd helped us there on the error. They made it tough on the fielders and they created a break for us." McCutchen homered and had three hits for Pittsburgh. Houstons 11-31 start is its worst and matched Miami for the poorest record in the major leagues. Astros starter Jordan Lyles allowed two runs -- one earned -- and four hits in five innings and is 0-4 with a 6.75 ERA in six career starts against Pittsburgh. Pirates starter Jeanmar Gomez gave up four runs -- three earned -- and five hits in 4 2-3 innings. Houston built a 4-1 lead on Jason Castros sacrifice fly in the first and a three-run third that included Matt Dominguezs solo homer, Elmores run-scoring single and a throwing error by Walker at second. McCutchen homered in the first. "Our defence has been one of our strong suits pretty much the whole year," Porter said, "but tonight we did not play good defence and we put ourselves in position where it cost us the ballgame." Just as Montreal was settling into the first full working week of a new year, the Impact announced the appointment of their new head coach. OAKLAND, Calif. -- After too often finding themselves on the wrong end of close games a year ago, the Oakland Raiders have thrived in those situations this season.Derek Carr and the Raiders found a new way to win Sunday, using a go-ahead, fourth-down 21-yard touchdown pass to Michael Crabtree and a botched hold on a potential tying field goal to beat the San Diego Chargers 34-31 .Guys have a lot of confidence because we work really hard especially in those situations, Carr said. We spend a lot of time throwing routes, spend a lot of time going over coverages, spend a lot of time in two-minute drills, end of game situations. You hang our hat on weve done this before. Lets be confident when we get on the field. After using a late 2-point conversion to win the opener, stopping a late Tennessee drive in a Week 3 win and using a late score and defensive stop to beat Baltimore last week, the Raiders (4-1) survived against the Chargers (1-4) to post their first three-game winning streak in five years. That has put an Oakland team that hasnt made the playoffs since 2002 in a tie for first place in the AFC West with Denver. Its nice, but the road still goes through Denver, Carr said. They are Super Bowl champs, division champs. I will always pay respect to them because thats what theyve earned. We have earned absolutely nothing yet.The Chargers know just as well how small the difference can be from winning and losing -- only they seem to always be at the wrong end.San Diego had already lost three games it led at the two-minute warning, blowing a 21-point lead to Kansas City and a 13-point fourth-quarter advantage last week versus New Orleans. Then came the latest loss that was sealed when Drew Kaser couldnt hold the snap on a 36-yard field goal attempt that could have tied the game.Just when you think youve seen it all, something like that happens, coach Mike McCoy said. Here are some other takeaways from the game:BOSAS DEBUT: Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa madee an impressive debut after missing training camp during a nasty contract dispute and sitting out the first four games with a hamstring injury.dddddddddddd He came in on the second drive and had a sack and a tackle for loss in the first half. He added a second sack in the fourth quarter. It felt pretty natural, Bosa said. Its nice to get the butterflies out because I was pretty nervous coming into this game.VALUABLE FILL-IN: The Raiders signed Perry Riley Jr. on Tuesday and put the former Washington linebacker right into the mix. With Malcolm Smith hindered by a quadriceps injury, Riley got the start. He forced a fumble by Antonio Gates on the opening drive and finished with seven tackles.I knew when we got him what he was going to bring to the table, linebacker Bruce Irvin said. Tough, hard-nosed competitive guy who makes plays. He showed that on the first possession.ROUGH DAY: Kaser had tough day even before the botched hold. He punted just once and shanked that attempt for just 16 yards. Oakland took over on the 32 and drove for a TD that made it 34-31.COOPER SCORES: Raiders receiver Amari Cooper hadnt scored a touchdown in four games before breaking through against the Chargers. He scored on a 64-yard pass from Carr in the third quarter and added a 2-point conversion after Crabtrees TD. Cooper also nearly had three more scores, but couldnt get both feet down inbounds on two throws into the end zone and was unable to re-establish himself after being interfered with on a third play.First one is always the hardest, no matter what it is, Carr said. Im just happy for him because he works his tail off.DIVISION SHOWDOWNS: Both teams remain in the division next week with the Chargers hosting the Broncos on Thursday night and the Raiders hosting Kansas City on Sunday.---AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP-NFL ' ' '
