Major League Soccer will attract more international players to the competition as it continues to grow in stature, according to CEO Don Garber. Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Kaka and Andrea Pirlo are among the players already competing in the MLS, which returns this weekend for its 20th season. With Ashley Cole and Nigel de Jong also having traded European football for the MLS this summer, Garber believes even more established foreign players will make the move to the United States in the future. I saw an interview that Steven Gerrard did where he said the league is far more competitive than he thought when he was playing in the Premier League. So many international players are seeing our league and watching it on broadcast around the world, Garber told Sky Sports News HQ. LA Galaxy duo Steven Gerrard and Robbie Keane are preparing for the new season Our sport continues to grow in this country, our clubs are more connected with the community, our stadiums are getting bigger and better, the competition is getting more intense and theres more of a soccer nation here in the US. There are going to be more international players looking to come over to our shores. When asked whether he felt any of the MLS clubs could compete against European footballs elite sides, Garber added: Well, probably not on a day-to-day basis. We are still a young league, our clubs are still growing and developing. Frank Lampard is set for his second season with New York City The American players that make up the core of our rosters continue to improve, but the European leagues have a 100-year head start on us and well continue to do all we can to get bigger, better and stronger. W also need to be more relevant here in the US, but also around the world. But I am not sure we are going to be taking on Manchester United in the Champions League final any time soon.MLS returns to Sky Sports on Sunday March 6 when Chicago Fire face New York City FC from 7pm and Portland Timbers host Colombus.
