KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Lorenzo Cains night was not going the way he wanted. He was hitless in his first six at-bats with three strikeouts. It all ended with his fifth career walk-off hit.Cains two-out single in the 14th inning scored Christian Colon from second base and the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 3-2 on Wednesday.I had been ready to go home for a while, Cain said. I was happy to get the hit. It was definitely a rough game up to that point. I came through for the boys. Its a very good feeling.Colon opened the inning with a single and Paulo Orlando sacrificed him to second. Cain laced a single to center to score Colon, ending the 4-hour, 34-minute game, the longest by the Royals this season.Dillon Gee (4-5), the eighth Kansas City pitcher, struck out three in two perfect innings to pick up the victory. Matt Albers (2-5) was charged with the loss. What a crazy game that was, Gee said. I was in the dugout the whole game. But when Chien-Ming Wang came in, the Royals were out of available bullpen arms. Thats when pitching coach Dave Eiland approached Gee and told him to put on his spikes and go to the bullpen. Gee was penciled in to start Saturday, but that is doubtful after this emergency appearance.Jarrod Dyson led off the 13th inning with a triple, but the Royals failed to get him home. Dan Jennings struck out the next three batters: Drew Butera, Alex Gordon and Alcides Escobar.Im sure everybody was thinking the game was over at that point, Cain said after Dysons triple. But it took another inning. Fourteen pitchers combined to throw 424 pitches. There were 25 hits and 25 runners stranded. After the triple, it seemed like Jennings reached back and got a little something extra, White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. Hopefully we could have gotten a little momentum out of that.Tim Anderson delivered a run-producing single with two outs in the 11th to give the White Sox a 2-1 lead, but closer David Robertson failed to hold it.Anderson, who had struck out four times, hit a soft liner over the head of first baseman Eric Hosmer to score Todd Frazier, who led off the inning with a single off Wang.Robertson, who has blown saves in the first two games of the series, walked Hosmer to lead off the bottom of the 11th. Dyson sacrificed him to second and Salvador Perezs double scored Hosmer.White Sox left-hander Jose Quintana limited the Royals to four hits and one run over 7 1/3 innings. It was a tough game, Quintana said. Thats one of the games you try to give fight all the game. The weather was bad (102 heat index for the first pitch). We just try to get quick outs, try to throw a good quality pitch. Its bad when you try everything and you lose.He was pulled after Orlandos double in the eighth inning. Nate Jones replaced him and on his first pitch yielded a run-producing double to Cheslor Cuthbert. It was Jones seventh blown save of the season.Royals right-hander Ian Kennedy, who has a 0.93 ERA in his past three starts, held the White Sox to one run and six hits over 6 1/3 innings. Kennedy is 0-3 with five no-decisions since a June 26 victory over Houston. The Royals have scored a total of nine runs while Kennedy was on the mound in his past eight starts.J.D. Shuck, who hit .083 over his previous eight games, homered on a 2-0 pitch in the third, the only run Kennedy allowed. That was the White Sox only extra-base hit along with 12 singles.Orlando had two outfield assists. He threw out Omar Narvaez at the plate in the seventh when he attempted to score from second onShucks single to center. In the ninth, pinch-runner Carlos Sanchez tried to take second on Tyler Saladinos fly out to deep right-center, but Orlando threw him out.QUICK EJECTIONWhite Sox pitching Don Cooper was ejected by plate umpire Pat Hoberg five pitches into the bottom of the first inning for arguing balls and strikes.HAWK ABSENTKen Harrelson, who is in his 32nd season in the White Sox television booth, will miss all six games of this Kansas City and Miami road trip due to illness.TRAINERS ROOMWhite Sox: INF Brett Lawrie (strained left hamstring) has resumed swinging a bat. He looks much better from where he was, Ventura said. Its another step in the right direction for him, but, we dont know exactly how thats going to go.Royals: LHP Mike Minor, who has not pitched in the majors since Sept. 23, 2014, with the Braves and had surgery in 2015 to repair a torn labrum, is rehabbing with Triple-A Omaha. He likely will not rejoin the Royals until September, when the hope is could make some starts.UP NEXTWhite Sox: RHP Miguel Gonzalez is 0-1 with a 3.65 ERA in two starts this season against the Royals.Royals: LHP Danny Duffy is 4-0 with a 3.67 ERA in nine home starts this season. It seems like Joshua Dobbs has been at Tennessee forever. Dobbs will tell you that, for him, the past four years have passed in the blink of an eye.On Saturday Dobbs will run through the T formed by the Pride of the Southland Band for the final time when the Volunteers take on Missouri. It feels like Ive been here a while, said Dobbs, who will be starting his 33rd game at quarterback for Tennessee. But it also feels like it has flown by in some instances. But the urgency of the task at hand doesnt allow much time for reflection for Dobbs and his fellow 12 seniors. No. 19 Tennessee (7-3, 3-3 SEC) still has a chance to get to the SEC championship game. If the Volunteers can win their final two games with Missouri and Vanderbilt - and if Florida loses to LSU on Saturday - then Tennessee would go to Atlanta for the first time since 2007.And the Volunteers are going to need Dobbs to carry them. A week ago Kentucky ran for 443 yards against Tennessee, but Dobbs would not let his team lose. He threw for 223 yards and ran for 147 more, including a 45-yard touchdown run, as Tennessee won 49-36.Dobbs needs 329 total yards to become No. 3 on the Tennessee career yardage list behind Peyton Manning and Casey Clausen. He already holds the career rushing touchdown record for a quarterback with 26.And he has done it all as one of the best students in college football, majoring in Aerospace Engineering.Hes special, said Tennessee coach Butch Jones. He is everything you want a student-athlete to be.Here are some other key storylines for Saturday: No. 23 Florida (7-2, 5-2) can win the SEC East for the second straight year if the Gators can find a way to beat No. 16 LSU (6-3, 4-2) in Baton Rouge. Youll remember that this game was originally scheduled for Oct. 8 in Gainesville but was rescheduled and relocated due to Hurricane Matthew. LSU, under interim head coach Ed Orgeron, still has a chance at the Sugar Bowl if it can win its final two games with Florida and Texas A&M. Its been a tough season for Mississippi State (4-6, 2-4) but the Bulldogs still have a shot at their seventh straight bowl trip if they can beat Arkansas (6-4, 2-4). The Bulldogs, who have beaten Arkansas in each of the past four seasons, struggled last week against Alabama (51-3) as quarterback Nick Fitzgerald was held to only 15 yards rushing.Look for Fitzgerald to fare better against an Arkansas defense (12th in the SEC in rushing) that has struggled against good running teams like Auburn and LSU. There was not a better storybook ending last Saturday than that of Shea Patterson, the freshman quarterback from Ole Misss.dddddddddddd.After the Rebels lost senior quarterback Chad Kelly to an injury, coach Hugh Freeze had a tough decision to make: To just play out the season with Kellys backup, Jason Pellerin, or to take the redshirt off Shea Patterson, one of the nations top high school quarterbacks and the star of the 2016 recruiting class. After consulting with the family, Patterson played and led the Rebels to a stunning 29-28 victory at Texas A&M.Now Patterson gets his second career start when the Rebels (5-5, 2-4) travel to Vanderbilt (4-6, 1-5). A win would put Ole Miss into a bowl for the fifth straight year. Here are a few more quick storylines:Georgia (6-4, 4-4) is done in conference play. The Bulldogs host Louisiana-Lafayette (4-5) on Saturday and close out the season with Georgia Tech. Eight wins in Kirby Smarts first season, with a chance for a ninth in a bowl, would not be bad.South Carolina (5-5, 3-5) can clinch a bowl bid in Will Muschamps first season as coach with a win over Western Carolina (2-8).No. 25 Texas A&M (7-3, 4-3) plays Texas-San Antonio (5-5) and needs to have an uncomplicated day as the Aggies face LSU on Thanksgiving Day in College Station. After starting 0-2 Kentucky (5-5, 4-4) looked like a long shot for a bowl. But the Wildcats will clinch a spot in the postseason for the first time since 2010 by beating Austin Peay (0-10) at Commonwealth Stadium.No. 19 Auburn (7-3, 5-2) got its heart broken last week with a 13-7 loss at Georgia. That kept the Tigers from playing for the SEC West championship on Nov. 26 against Alabama. But the Tigers need to take care of business against Alabama A&M (4-6) and start getting ready to play for pride against the No. 1 team in the nation. Running back Kamryn Pettway will not play for Auburn for the second straight week and quarterback Sean White is out with a shoulder injury. Jeremy Johnson will start at quarterback, with John Franklin III also getting playing time, according to Auburn coach Gus Malzahn.No. 1 Alabama (10-0, 7-0) has the SEC West and a trip to Atlanta already locked up. So look for the Crimson Tide to get their starters out early against Chattanooga (8-2) in order to get ready for next weeks Iron Bowl with Auburn. A historical note: This will be Coach Nick Sabans 46th game with his team ranked No. 1. That breaks the record he shared with Woody Hayes and Bobby Bowden. Saban should get his 41st win as the No. 1 team, which also breaks the record he shared with Hayes and Bowden. ' ' '
