RENTON, Wash. -- During an interview on SportsCenter, Seattle Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett on Monday confirmed that he reached out to Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton to clarify comments he made about athletes and social change.I just said that Im not trying to make a division within the community of NFL players, Bennett said. Im just trying to bring unity, basically. Sometimes you read things, and it comes out like Im saying that thats the main person. But Im just saying that we need to work together to come together with whats going on and figure a way, how can we be better? How can we be better influencers?Just want to work well with all the players together. It takes a village to do something like this. Its not going to be one player. Its going to be a group of players. I just want to emphasize that to a lot of the players. On Saturday at Seahawks training camp, Bennett called on NFL players to follow the lead of their NBA and WNBA counterparts in influencing social change. In the NBA, everybody is standing up for it, so the greatest players are in the forefront of the movement, Bennett said Saturday. Here in the NFL, the greatest players arent in the forefront of the movement. Whether its the CBA, whether its things going on with trying to change the way -- concussions. The greatest players arent involved like LeBron James, Chris Paul and all these guys [in the NBA]. Our great players are sitting back just taking the dollars, whether its Cam Newton, all these guys. Theyre not really on the forefront of trying to change whats going on.Pro Football Talk first reported that Bennett called Newton.Through a team spokesperson, Newton declined to comment.ESPN Panthers reporter David Newton contributed to this report. I thought he was pretty good, but I thought the toughest part of his game was having to defend every possession with Telfair. I think that took a little bit out of him on his shooting. The Lobos other big question centered on the health of leading returning scorer Elijah Brown, who skipped both exhibition games as he dealt with a hamstring injury that has lingered since last season. He finished with 14 points and played 29 minutes.I think it hurt our team, Neal said of Brown missing the exhibitions. Im not saying it hurt our team where we got off to a poor start. I just think that continuity, playing together, trying to get back timing wise. I think it had an effect on the team. For the Bengals, Coney Island, New York native Telfair, who led the team in scoring last season with 20 points a game to earn Big Sky newcomer of the year, showed that last season was not a fluke.
