Hard work, dedication and sacrifice are the main reasons why Andy Murray has decided to re-hire Ivan lendl as his coach, claims Sky Sports tennis expert Mark Petchey. Murray announced on Sunday he would be rekindling his relationship with Lendl, with whom he enjoyed an enormously successful spell between 2012 and 2014.During their first period working together, Murray won Olympic gold, the US Open and then Wimbledon in 2013, but the partnership ended as Lendl felt unable to commit the amount of time his pupil required. Lendl (L) watches Murray during a practice session Murray has not won another major title since and, after splitting with Amelie Mauresmo last month, the world No 2 expressed his delight at sealing the reunion ahead of the tournament at Queens Club this week. And Petchey agrees that the 29-year-old has clearly made the right decision to go back and reappoint the Czech in order to bring the best out of him and to also work out a way of beating world No 1 Novak Djokovic. When you look at it in the cold light of day, certainly from Andys perspective it was obviously the golden period in his career, pardon the pun, with the gold medal and with obviously the two majors that book-ended that particular glory as well, he told Sky Sports. Murray will want Lendl to help him bring down Djokovic If youre looking for who is available right now in terms of a coach and obviously you want good feelings on court when youre looking at your box, then who better than Ivan to rediscover those. Not that Murray has been playing badly. In lots of ways this doesnt distract with what Jamie [Delgado] has done because hes had a fantastic claycourt season and hes played unbelievably well. But from Andys perspective he wants to put his name on another major trophy and felt that this is going to give him the best opportunity. Highlights from the Rome Masters Final as Murray recorded a rare victory over Djokovic Andy feels the need to talk to someone who has been in his shoes and theres not that many people around that have been in his shoes and if thats what he needs heading into a final of a major tournament then thats the type of person he needs to have a conversation with. If youre looking for who is available right now in terms of a coach and obviously you want good feelings on court when youre looking at your box, then who better than Ivan to rediscover those. Mark Petchey on Ivan Lendl Clearly that is why he has gone down the route that he has and unquestionably he has so much respect for what Ivan has achieved. They have very similar outlooks in terms of hard work, dedication and sacrifice. Theyre very compatible on a professional level.Petchey insists Murray will want Lendl to help him conserve energy through the main draw of a Grand Slam. At the French Open the Scot was put through his paces in the early rounds, playing two tough five-setters against Radek Stepanek and young French wildcard Mathias Bourgue. Murray needs to conserve energy at major tournaments I dont think its a technical thing that Andy is looking for from Ivan, said Murrays former coach Petchey. I think that Andy is looking for efficiency through the draw. A couple of times guys got inspired and all those slightly energy-sapping moments that come in a major tournament which possibly can contribute to you not playing as you would like when you get to the final. Murray defeated Djokovic in thrilling style to claim his first ATP Rome 1000 Masters title The whole process of winning a major isnt just about hitting forehand and backhands and serving well. A lot of it is about the conservation of energy and from Andys perspective when he looks back at the French Open final, hell be feeling as though his first serve percentage dropped dramatically after the first set so was that a function of not getting through the draw as easily as he would have wished? Sometimes you cant do anything about it.The beauty of the sport is that sometimes opponents can play fantastic tennis and you have just got to adapt and react to that which is what he did, but was that a factor in why the first serve went down? Djokovic beat Murray in four sets in the French Open final last month Murray will hope Lendls impact carries into Wimbledon in a fortnights time, when he will again bid to bring down Djokovic, his conqueror in both the Australian and French Open finals this year.Djokovic currently holds all four major titles as well as dominance over the British No 1, winning 13 of their last 15 matches, including the last five at Grand Slams. Murray was humble in defeat to Djokovic at Roland Garros Playing Novak, he extracts perfection from you. You have to play virtually perfect tennis which is stressful enough stepping on to the court to play that and obviously you have to have the maximum amount of energy over five sets to be able to execute that, added Petchey.Getting Ivan when he did will give Andy that little bit of inspiration in terms of being able to play that week at Queens Club and find the level that hes going to need to win that title again. For Andy, grass is a very natural surface on which he moves naturally on it. He always returns well so as long as he returns well, hes one of the best three players comfortably on this surface and so he knows that if he puts in his best tennis on a grasscourt hes more than capable of winning plus he has a winning record over Novak on grass. His priority at the moment is working a way of getting past him.
