METAIRIE, La. -- Help has arrived for the New Orleans Saints 31st-ranked defense.First-round draft pick Sheldon Rankins returned to practice Wednesday and has been designated as the Saints one player to return from injured reserve this season. The rookie defensive tackle was placed on IR in Week 1 after he suffered a broken left fibula during training camp. Wednesday was the first day he was eligible to return under NFL rules. The earliest Rankins can return to a game is Week 9 at the San Francisco 49ers.Rankins said he went through a few individual drills as he slowly increases his workload. And he said he thinks a Week 9 return to game action is realistic.Barring any setbacks, I think were on schedule for that time frame. But Im gonna take it day by day and let God handle the rest, Rankins said.Rankins admitted there would be some rust but said he began running a few weeks ago and that his weight is right where he feels most comfortable at 305 pounds.I think a couple weeks [of practicing before playing] is fine, Rankins said. I think in a sense as a football player, youve been doing it for so long you kind of have some semblance of what youre doing out there. But timing is everything. When Im rushing the passer, when I throw my hands or when I take this step to come inside and different things like that. And conditioning -- being able to run to the ball, play hard, things like that.I think those are the real things these few weeks are gonna allow me to do and be a big help for me.Rankins described the past two weeks as quiet and said it felt great to be around his teammates, cutting up and laughing on the practice field. He said it also felt great to do things like diving into a tackling dummy.Yeah, I definitely was kind of anxious to go through that, Rankins said. Little things like tackling drills and hitting sleds and football movements was fun for me today, just to see how my body would react to it, how my leg would react to it. It was good for me.The Saints (2-3) could use Rankins. The defense ranks 31st in the NFL with 419.4 yards allowed per game. And they have allowed the most points in the league at 33.6 per game. The 6-foot-2, 305-pound Rankins is a disruptive force up the middle who should help both the pass rush and the run defense. Rankins had 14 sacks and 26.5 tackles for loss over his final two years at Louisville before New Orleans drafted him with the No. 12 pick. The Saints also are hoping to get No. 1 cornerback Delvin Breaux back soon from his own broken left fibula that he suffered in Week 1. Its not clear yet whether Breaux will resume practicing this week. Will Butcher Jersey . At a news conference Tuesday where it was thought that the fiery Schallibaum may be shown the door after a dismal finish to the Major League Soccer season, team president Joey Saputo said no decision has been made on whether the Swiss Volcano will be back in 2014. Josh Brown was placed on the commissioners exempt list Friday, and sources told ESPN NFL Insider Chris Mortensen that the veteran kicker is done with the New York Giants.Multiple sources also expressed doubt that Brown would ever kick again in the NFL after documents surfaced this week in which the veteran kicker admitted to domestic abuse against his wife.NFL senior vice president Adolpho Birch, in a letter sent to Brown, said the league wants to investigate further upon learning of the new documents, which were released by the King County (Washington) Sheriffs Office and stem from Browns 2015 arrest.?As you may be aware, the NFL made multiple requests of the Sheriffs Office for any and all pertinent information developed through its investigation, the letter to Brown stated. Because the Sheriffs Office was treating its investigation as an open matter, however, the NFLs requests were rejected and the materials first became known and available to us at the same time they were released publicly. The released materials appear to contain information regarding other incidents of abuse separate from the May 22, 2015 incident for which you were disciplined under the Personal Conduct Policy. As a result, further investigation by the league into those separate incidents is needed.?In an interview with BBC Sport, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said, We take this issue incredibly seriously. This is something weve been working on with policy changes, to educating our players to make sure they understand how they deal with issues with their family, give them resources to be able to deal with this. But when it happens, were not going to tolerate it. So we have some new information here, well evaluate that in the context of our policy, and well take it from there.ddddddddddddBrown already?served a one-game suspension without pay to kick off this season for violating the leagues personal conduct policy.Asked whether Brown can expect further punishment, Goodell told BBC Sport, The policy the way its structured right now is for an incident. And it can be reduced or increased on the basis that first offense is six games, second offense is banishment. So its the only policy, the only issue where we have that type of penalty.Birchs letter to Brown said the NFL expects to conduct this review expeditiously and make any appropriate adjustments to your roster status in a timely manner.By being placed on the commissioners exempt list, Brown, who has three days to appeal the decision, will still be able to collect his base salary of approximately $1.15 million and is permitted to attend the Giants facility for meetings, individual workouts, therapy and rehabilitation, and other permitted non-football activities, the letter said. He is not allowed to attend practices or games.Earlier Friday in London, Giants coach Ben McAdoo said the team wasnt going to abandon Brown,?even after leaving him home as his team prepares for Sundays game vs. the Los Angeles Rams. Were not going to turn our back on Josh, McAdoo said as he was being peppered with questions. Hes our teammate.McAdoo said he went to each position room Thursday to inform players that Brown would not make the trip to London. The Giants left Thursday evening.
